Some of us aren’t comfortable on the other side of the lens. It can bring stress, anxiety and internal chaos. It can bring the fear of being perceived, or for not having the person you see in the mirror be the same you see in your photos.
The fear of not knowing where to stand, where to look or where to put your hands.
Of others judging you.
And that is all perfectly okay. Even as a photographer, I have some of these same fears on the other side of the lens. And that, my friends, is why I exist! So here are a few tips for relaxing in front of the camera and creating the photos you’ve been dreaming of.

Movement is the key to natural photos. It’s easier to breathe and to not overthink… well, everything. That’s one of the reasons I normally start each session with having you walk. Walk away from me, walk back, walk like you’re tipsy. You get the picture. I’ll have you swing your arms, stretch, and dance your favorite music. Hell, I’ll even do it with you!
At Sunflower Stills Photography, we’re all about living in the moment and tapping into the beauty around you. The plants, the sunset, the adorable dog being walked on the trail to your left. That’s key, too. That’s why I give prompts and direct, rather than pose you. That’s why we’ll tap into your emotions by connecting with your surroundings, reflecting on moments that brought the same sentiment, and rocking a soundtrack that sets the mood.

For this photo, I had Lanae sit in the grass. I told her part her lips and breathe in and out a few times. Big, deliberate breathes. She sat in the moment for a little while and took in every bit of Phil Hardberger Park. We followed that up by reflecting on one of the happiest moments of her life so far. It wasn’t something she said out loud. It wasn’t for me. It was a way to connect to herself and the absolute pride she felt in that memory.
Most importantly, you need to find a photographer you can connect with! No amount of directing, music or dad jokes will allow you to loosen up if you’re with an artist that doesn’t make you feel comfortable. Someone you don’t resonate with. This is why I always recommend us meeting up for coffee! We get to chat about your photoshoot face to face, and you can see if I’m the right fit for you! Plus, it’s already a little nerve wrecking meeting someone for the first time. Let’s not do that the day of your photoshoot.
The whole point being, trust the process. Find a photographer you can trust. Don’t let the fear hold you back. You got this!
